Searching for an online English class for your child can feel overwhelming. Every programme says it’s “fun” and “effective”, but what should you actually check before you pay? Here is a simple checklist to help you decide, whichever class you choose.
1. Start with your child’s current level, not the class
A class is only right if it matches where your child is now. Before you compare programmes, find out:
- Can your child understand simple spoken instructions in English?
- Can they read a short paragraph and tell you what it’s about?
- Can they write two or three connected sentences on their own?
If you’re not sure, ask for a level check before enrolling. A good programme will place your child at the right level, not just sell you the next available slot.
2. Ask who is teaching, and how
Recorded videos and apps have their place, but young children usually need someone who responds to them. Ask:
- Is the class taught live by a real teacher?
- Does the teacher talk with each child during the lesson, or mostly lecture to the class?
- How are teachers trained to work with young children?
3. Check the class size
In an online lesson, attention drops quickly if a child never gets a turn to speak. Ask how many children are in each class and how often each child speaks. Small groups usually give every child more chances to practise.
4. Look at what is taught, not just how it’s marketed
For Malaysian children, especially primary pupils, a useful class should support what they learn in school, including listening, speaking, reading and writing, without simply drilling past-year papers. Ask to see a sample lesson plan or topic list.
5. Ask how you will see progress
You should never have to guess whether lessons are working. Ask:
- Will you get regular feedback from the teacher?
- Is progress measured in a clear way, for example by level or skill?
6. Make sure the format fits your child’s age and attention
A 4-year-old and an 11-year-old need very different lesson lengths. Ask how long each lesson is and what the teacher does when a child loses focus.
A quick parent checklist
- [ ] My child’s current level has been checked
- [ ] Lessons are live, with a real teacher
- [ ] Classes are small enough for my child to speak regularly
- [ ] The content supports school English skills
- [ ] I will receive regular progress feedback
- [ ] The lesson length suits my child’s age
How YouSeed approaches this
At YouSeed, classes are taught live by real teachers in small groups, and every child starts with a free one-to-one English level assessment, so we know their level before recommending anything. Our trilingual programme is for children aged 4 to 12 and suits children from SJKC and international schools.
Want to know where your child stands? Book a free English level assessment and our teachers will share your child’s current level and what to work on next.
